Zmago, the owner and lead winemaker, met us at the top of the hill that leads to his family farm and the headquarters of a small organic Slovene wine label, Guerila. He walked down from the family's house to greet us, a plate of dried fruit, bread, and homemade cheese in hand.
For the next few hours as we tasted the wines, my friends and I chatted with Zmago. He told us the story of the winery and his family. He told us how just a few years ago people all over town told him he was crazy for going into the wine business. We learned about the grapes and toured the cellars, and he answered all our questions about winemaking. A beautiful family farm, impressive range of organic wines, and a friendly host made for a perfect afternoon.
Logistics: Call ahead to schedule a tasting. To get there, head towards Ajdovščina in the Vipava Valley, which is about one hour from Ljubljana. Once you pass the town of Ajdovščina, you'll drive a few miles up into the hills to Planina, where you'll find Guerila winery.
