A visit to Greenwood Great House, which is located about 15 miles from Montego Bay and 7 miles from Falmouth, offers an intriguing glimpse of plantation life in Jamaica. Greenwood was the 15-room entertainment home of the Barrett family, whose relatives included the English poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and her aunt, Sarah Moulton Barrett, better known as Pinkie, the young girl in the now famous painting by Thomas Lawrence.
Greenwood, which has been occupied continuously since 1790, has the finest collection of Victorian-era furniture, rare books and musical instruments. Several of the instruments have been restored and are played during the 45-minute tour of house.
The house’s expansive verandah gives a sweeping unobstructed view of the island all the way to Falmouth.
Guided tours of Greenwood Great House are available daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
