Grave of Óscar Romero

San Salvador, El Salvador

Beatified by Pope Francis in 2015, Romero is El Salvador’s first saint and, for many Salvadorans, their late but no less great national hero. Romero was a Salvadoran Catholic priest and archbishop who dared to speak out against persecution during the civil war, and he was assassinated during Mass. His grave is a place of homage and continues to attract Catholics and social justice activists who honor his work.
