Grace Cathedral

San Francisco's first Grace Church dates back to the days of the gold rush, when an Episcopal church by that name was founded in 1849. Construction of the Grace Cathedral that now stands atop Nob Hill began in 1928, though the building was not completed until 1964. In addition to its soaring architecture, the church is notable for its AIDS Chapel (with an altarpiece by artist Keith Haring) and its reproductions of the doors to the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence, Italy, by Renaissance sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti. Even if you aren't Episcopalian—or religious at all—the church is an appealing stop as an elegant and serene space in the heart of San Francisco.
