Golden Gate
Located on the palace's northern wall, the Porta Aurea (Golden Gate) was where Emperor Diocletian first entered Split from his nearby hometown of Salona. The now-stripped niches on the facade once showcased sculptures of regional leaders, including the emperor himself. Just outside the gate is an imposing sculpture of medieval bishop Gregory of Nin by Ivan Meštrović. Locals and visitors make a wish by touching the statue’s big toe, now polished to a shine.
