Visit Austria's oldest family-run handicraft company
A museum devoted to bells at first doesn't seem terribly exciting. But, since Grassmayr is Austria's oldest family-run handicraft company, it seemed like it'd be worth a visit. It also helped that my guide in the city was the family matriarch.
The Grassmayr family began making bells in 1599 and have produced bells that have went across Europe and even as far as Israel. During a visit, guests visit the old foundry and discover how bells are made and how they achieve a particular tone. The museum portion explores the history of bell making, including a period where they were not allowed to produce during WWII.
Grassmayr is located just outside the old town, but still within easy reach of public transportation.
