Known as “the city of stone,” the cobblestoned former Ottoman trading town of Gjirokastër lies on steep slopes overlooking a valley. In addition to its enormous castle with an armaments museum, this UNESCO World Heritage Site draws visitors for its gorgeous stone “tower houses.” The largest of them, named Zekate, is a private museum focused on the town's architecture. Oddly enough, the town's ethnographic museum is located in an Ottoman house that was once the home of the dictator Enver Hoxha.
