When you live in Alaska, you can at times take things for granted. As a result, you might not get out and do as much as you would if you were just visiting. Same is true of a lot of places - for example, it's amazing how many people living in New York have not been to the Statue of Liberty.
Getting out for some whale watching on a photo safari while I was in Juneau was one of the best and most quintessential Alaskan things I ever did. This baby humpback was playing all around our boat... Jumping out of the water, splashing back down, and then surfacing again elsewhere. We never saw its parents, but they were no doubt close by.
