Sleeping with Sea Lions
Cruising around the Galapagos, there's no shortage of wildlife and photographic opportunities. But this one moment was something special. Our boat anchored at sea, and as we ferried onto shore I realized that those weren't giant barking boulders sprinkled all over the white sand beach, but sea lions. The mammoth creatures were a mix of mamas keeping watchful eyes on their young, and animals like this guy, completely satisfied with ignoring the intrusive humans and sleeping in the sun. This is one of those photos that I pull out on rainy or stressful days. Looking at it, I can feel the heat of the equatorial sun, the sound of the crashing waves beside me, and I can take in his perfect calm. He sleeps as if he has nowhere to be and nothing (not even a nosey traveler) can disrupt his dreams. The Galapagos have so much to offer however you chose to travel them, but for me, this moment truly sums up the bliss of a remote vacation where you can surrender yourself to perfect relaxation.
