Discovering Vintage Kimono in Tokyo
My friends and I stumbled across this groovy little vintage kimono store in Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. The young women pictured on the floor were having a sewing circle, making new clothes with old kimono fabric. I love the look of the woman standing with the blue hat! My friend, Carol, is wearing a haori jacket that she bought there. The shop is located in a lovely old wooden house along the Myosenji River, where kimono dye houses were once located (they would rinse fabrics in the river). The building was built in the 50s after the neighborhood was destroyed in World War II bombing raids.
