Hop a Monte wicker toboggans one wild ride when visiting Madeira
The Monte wicker toboggans are typically made from wicker and powered down the hill by two men called the “Carriers” on Madeira Island. This wild trip lasts for approximately 10-15 minutes for a 1.5 mile distance and takes you from the bottom of the stairs of the Church of Our Lady of Monte to Livramento, in Funchal.
This is a ride really worth of the thrill and a unique experience that dates back to 1850. The Monte driver, or Carreiro, wears traditional white clothes, a hat made of straw, known as straw boaters, and thick rubber soled boots that work as brakes while riding down the hill.
The ride is quite safe and can reach up to 25miles/hour and it attracts thousands of guests every year. American author, Ernest Hemingway, mentioned his experience in a wicker basket toboggan sled as the "most exhilarating experience" of his life.
