Presiding over a quaint park on a peninsula overlooking the Sognefjord, the monumental statue of the Viking chief Fridtjov (or Frithjof) the Bold stands high on an elevated platform, easily spotted from ships sailing along the fjord. The statue was a gift of the German Emperor Wilhelm II who had a special connection to the area—he spent summer holidays on Norway's fjords—and to the romantic saga of Fridtjov and Ingebørg, which dates from around 1300.
