Foxfire Mountain is not a premier hiking destination, but when my eight-year-old daughter expressed an interest in hiking, I laced up my hiking boots and we headed to Sevierville, TN.
The hiking trail at Foxfire Mountain takes less than an hour to complete. While not on the to-do list for serious day hikers, this trail offers several features conducive to cultivating the interest of a budding backpacker.
First up is the country's longest swinging bridge, America's Bridge to Prosperity. Over 400 feet long, the bridge spans Dunn's Gorge and links Foxfire Mountain to nearby Prosperity Mountain. Ninety tons of concrete and six large cables provide safety and fun on this attraction.
On the Prosperity Mountain side of the gorge, the trail enters a covered bridge and continues up the mountain and brings hikers to Lost Mine Falls where a second swinging bridge, Cliffhanger Swinging Bridge, spans a thirty foot gap placing you eye level with the falls and sixty feet above the rippling pool below. The trail then circles back on itself and hikers cross America's Bridge to Prosperity a second time as they finish up their trek.
Foxfire Mountain also offers zip lines, off-road vehicle tours, fresh barbecue and ice cream. Each adventure requires a fee but there are several options for combination packages. The grounds and facilities are clean and well laid out, the employees are friendly and helpful, and there are many small amenities designed for children and adults alike.
