This Brisbane neighborhood, affectionately called “the Valley,” was Australia’s first official entertainment district. It's still a center for nightlife, as well as dance, theater and circus performances at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. But there are plenty of daytime amusements, including exhibitions at the Institute of Modern Art and a wide range of shopping and eating options. The area's architecture is a mix, with Chinese gates and tiled roofs in the Chinatown Mall and heritage buildings housing designer boutiques on James Street. Recently, the action has gravitated to Bakery Lane, a development that includes cafés and restaurants catering to Brisbane foodies and, yes, a bakery (I Heart Brownies—and you won't believe the treats in question are gluten-free).
