Fort Lancaster State Historic Site
The site of a famed midnight battle during which Confederate forces beat back a Union invasion, Fort Lancaster was occupied by Texas troops for the entire Civil War era. The site was a massive city-within-a-fort and the ruins include the ghostly remains of 25 original buildings including a blacksmith, a hospital, and a bakery. The fascinating story of the aborted U.S. Camel Corps, which was abandoned by the military just before the Civil War, is told by reenactors from the Texas Camel Corps at the annual Fort Lancaster Western Frontier Days festival in early May.
