Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese and eventually taken over by the British is the main tourist attraction in Mombasa. After a couple of months in East Africa where there hasn’t been many “historical” monuments, we decided to check out Fort Jesus. An elder gentleman who is a licensed guide, offering his service, immediately approached us. Normally, we would have declined the guide; after all, it’s a fort. What more is there to say about it? Except there is something in is mans’ demeanor that spoke to us, so we’ve hired him. An hour and a half later, we’ve learned more about the history of Fort Jesus than we ever cared to know. Hamid’s excitement for the history of the Fort and the old neighborhood is infectious. The couple of hours we spent in Hamid’s company and his enthusiasm for the history of Mombasa that was truly the highlight.
