Tikal

Tikal is Guatemala's best-known Maya site, and like Antigua, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. It's not hard to understand why it garnered that superlative when you're standing at the base of one of the site's pyramids, taking in its awe-inspiring scale and construction. An excursion from Puerto Quetzal is not only possible, it's quite a part of the adventure, as it involves a 90-minute flight and an hour's drive into the Guatemalan jungle.
