Fengyu Valley 凤羽坝 is situated almost halfway in between Dali 大理 and Lijiang 丽江, two of China's busiest tourist destinations, yet it's a place completely off the tourist map. This valley is set off from the main highway, and you have to look for it to find it. Excellent climate, water, and soil have blessed Fengyu, making it one of the most pristine, beautiful agricultural valleys in all of China. The fields are verdant with crops at all times of year. In the winter, farmers grow beans, rapeseed, and wheat. In the summer they flood the paddies and grow rice. The different crops in the odd-shaped fields produce a gorgeous sight when viewed from above, or better yet, in Google Earth.
Fengyu can be reached by bus from nearby Eryuan County 洱源县 but a much more dramatic way to reach Fengyu is hiking in over the Cangshan Mountains 苍山. There are trails both from the east, beginning in Yousuo town 右所镇 and passing Laping village 腊坪村, or coming from the south, through Huadian Valley 花甸坝。
