The suburbs of Chongqing are dotted with little villages and hot springs. It’s a must to take a quick trip out to see one, like Fensheng Old Town. Established in the Song Dynasty, it flourished during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It’s exactly what most people think of when they think of an ancient Chinese village: distinctive swooping roofs, low tight buildings, cobblestone roads. There’s something weird and interesting about Fengsheng. Someone planted North American maple trees there, so in the fall you can go there to watch the leaves change.
