Festive Gingerbread Displays, Making Spirits Bright
Known for little more than several luxury hotels and its proximity to Georgetown, the West End neighborhood hides a wonderful treat for D.C. residents and tourists every winter: an impressive, magical gingerbread display.
Each Christmas season, the Fairmont's pastry chef and culinary team work together to painstakingly construct a mesmerizing display in gingerbread. The team pores over every inch, achieving stunning detail in fondant, gingerbread, and sugar.
Though the display is sometimes tucked away in an obscure corner of the lobby, the wafting scent of winter spices is unmistakable, and lures the curious.
Past displays have included The Grinch Who Stole Christmas and Christmas villages, but my favorite (pictured) brought together the claymation cast of characters from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
As a bonus, a stroll through the Fairmont's courtyard, laden in Christmas lights and light-up reindeer, makes for a delightful and festive nightcap.
