Maya often rides her bicycle along Esplanade Avenue, taking in the beautiful nineteenth-century houses of this “millionaires’ row” in one of her favorite sections of New Orleans. Other draws are the people watching both on the streets and at its coffee houses, including Fair Grinds, just off of Esplanade. The two-story restaurant has a full coffeehouse menu with vegan pastries, iced lattes, sandwiches, and salads, but beyond the food and drink, Fair Grinds is a neighborhood gathering spot. Owner Wade Rathke is a community organizer and Fair Grinds hosts local performers as well as discussions on topics from how to make New Orleans a fair trade city to the impact of HBO’s Treme on the neighborhood.
