While in Cozumel Mexico this past November I had an opportunity of a lifetime! I had originally planned to visit Tulum Mayan ruins while our cruise ship stopped in Cozumel but INSTANTLY changed my mind when I found out we could participate in an activity recently opened to the public in which we would be helping save baby sea turtles.
I am a HUGE animal lover so even though I have always wanted to see Tulum in person, there was no hesitation in changing my plans.
We spent a little time in a brief class taught by local biologists explaining the different species of turtles, how to handle them, what to expect, their conservation status etc.. Then we were whisked away by taxi bus to two locations. The first one is where we actually dug up baby sea turtles which were too weak to get to the water on their own the night before and the next location was the place where we released them near the waters edge so they could get to the ocean.
It was SUCH a rewarding experience. I cried tears of joy as I watched the baby sea turtles make their way to the water, as if I had just witnessed my only child win a Nobel prize or something!
Knowing I was able to contribute, in any capacity to the preservation of such an amazing species changed my life forever and has motivated me to a new level to "do my part" on a daily basis.
