Sniff a whiff of the lilacs
They say the human nose can distinguish only seven different scents at the same time. I used to believe that until I visited Ewing Park, where more than 1,400 lilac bushes bloom every April. There are 120-some varieties, each with its own distinct smell. And while I doubt my nose could whiff all of the differences, I’m pretty sure I could get more than seven – and probably more if I wore a blindfold. The best time for sniff-sampling is in the early evening, just when the day’s heat begins to cool.
