Moinhos do Vento Velhos ( Old Windmills)
Driving through the countryside of Portugal one can see the huge, modern wind turbines. When I saw them I longed to see the old picturesque windmills. After looking into the history of the windmills I discovered that many farmers on their quintas (farms) are refurbishing the windmills. The interest in organic and natural foods has brought about this work. The farmers use the mills to once again grind their organic or natural corn into meal for their own use and to sell to their neighbors. If you see an old windmill spinning follow the road up the hill and you might even be lucky enough to go in and be given a tour. The Portuguese are usually very friendly and polite. It is an exciting experience to turn a curve in the road and to look up and see a beautiful spinning windmill. There are also refurbished windmills for rent for holiday accommodations. The Algarve has several available for rent.
