Étang de Thau
The Étang de Thau is a saltwater lagoon, measuring 24 kilometers (15 miles) long and eight kilometers (five miles) wide, that white egrets, herons and pink flamingos call home. It’s also an important site in France’s mussel- and oyster-cultivation industries (and the source of other shellfish served in Sète’s restaurants): The beds can be seen from glass-bottom boats. The old Phare des Onglous is a lighthouse that marks where the historic Canal du Midi enters the lagoon.
