Estancia Rio Quillen,
save place
Northern Patagonia on Horseback
Prepare yourself for a journey. The Estancia Rio Quillen is 125 kilometers drive from San Martine de Los Andes, an adventure that takes you through mountain passes along river streams and down single lane winding gravel roads. But once you arrive and brush the dust from your clothes, breath in the Alpine air, and venture into the lodge, you'll be ready for the next adventure. On the day my friend shot this image we were at the end of a trail ride that started out as a half day ride to picnic at a hidden stream, and stretched into a 9 hour adventure, that included a slap across the face from a monkey puzzle tree, a 4 inch wide trail ascending the side of a hill over rocky streams, several slippery river crossings, and the final emergence on this high plain where the promise of an asado kept us going long after our legs had the strength to signal the horses to a trot. Luckily our Mapuche trail guides were miracle workers. A day or two after recovering from our adventure, we were off on a milder adventure, floating down rapids in the Rio Quillen and fly fishing (in between untangling our lines from trees)
