Working at a fishery isn't for everyone, but even if you aren't looking for a 16 hour shift on the line, visiting the area around Bristol Bay near Dillingham is a great experience. The views are spectacular and during the summer, the sun never really sets, so late night hikes are always an option. You can charter a small plane to take you to any of the nearby villages and whale watching or private fishing excursions are available.
And if you do want to work, there are many fisheries and boats in the area looking for help during salmon season. It's a great summer job for college students.
I went to Ekuk for a change of pace, for adventure, and to re-evaluate my priorities in life. I was a year out of graduate school with no career to speak of. I needed to get away and work hard. I needed to meet new people. I needed to wake up and see the mountains and the bay and remember the world is so much bigger and wilder than we could ever hope to imagine. I wasn't disappointed.
