Where to get the best dessert wine in the Hamptons
Duckwalk Vineyard has both a North and South Fork presence, and my first brush with this charming vineyard was in Watermill, New York (South Fork).
A sprawling estate but manageable in size (it is much smaller compared to Wolffer Estate), Duckwalk offers everything from rich, full-bodied red wines (try the 2010 Pinot Meunier, which offers hints of currant, raspberry, and cherry) to light white wines.
But it is their signature bestseller, the 2012 Blueberry Port, that is the best in show. Sweet but not too sweet, deep, full and ripe, the port is perfect for dessert and even more sinful when paired with dark chocolate. It is made with mountain blueberries from Maine and hand picked in the cool, calm morning. The mountain berries burst with flavor and leap off the glass onto your palate.
I was surprised to find a dessert wine making it to the top of the great Duckwalk vine, and that too, a wine not made from grapes! But this rich, deep port made me respect all things blueberry. Other wines to try include the Windmill White, with its strong hints of honey, pear and wild flowers.
Although the Blueberry Port is well worth driving to South Fork for, Duckwalk does ship to New York and Florida.
