Diving Chuuk Lagoon

Often called the shipwreck capital of the world, Chuuk is legendary for its submerged WWII wreckage and clear, warm, 30-meter-visibility (100-foot-visibility) scuba conditions. The Imperial Japanese Navy staged out of here until the U.S. launched Operation Hailstone in 1944—a carrier-based air attack that sank a dozen enemy warships, 32 supply carriers and more than 200 aircraft. Now covered in coral, the relics attract marine life and enthusiastic divers alike, and there’s a push to make the area a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
