Del Mar is a small, affluent beach community in northern San Diego County. The very meaning of Del Mar (“the sea” in Spanish) conjures up thoughts of long walks on bluffs perched high about the surf, fantastic crimson-colored sunsets, and lazy days watching surfers and paddle-boarders alike line up to catch the next wave.
Most visitors like to take in the Del Mar sun at either the 15th Street or Torrey Pines beach access points. While parking is often difficult and the crowds build up in the Summer, these are great spots to lay down a towel and catch some rays.
Local Beach Access: If you want to escape the crowds and are up for a bit of an adventurous hike, skip these popular beaches and head to Stratford. Tucked away in the neighborhoods between the two locations above are several alleys to the Del Mar bluffs. From there, follow surfers and meander down dirt paths carved into the cliffs to find your way to your own private beach. Be cautious as there are no guardrails or steps. Once you are there you will not be disappointed!
