They say sunrise and sunset are the most magical times in the desert. They are also the coolest times of the day. I headed out to the Namib desert to witness the beauty of Sossusvlei and in particular Deadvlei. What I came to experience was nothing short of awe-inspiring beauty. Deadvlei was flooded many hundreds of years ago, which gave rise to camel thorn trees. Drought and encroaching sand dunes sapped the area of water and the trees died. They are still present at the Vlei, although not petrified, the trees do not decompose because of the extreme heat. The scene is what I imagine Mars to look like, especially because of the red sand that is found throughout DeadVlei and the larger Namib-Naukluft Park.
