Food & Wine pairing class in beautiful Carmel California
De Tierra vineyard has a tasting room in Carmel California and they are now offering a food and wine pairing class. Initially, I didn't think much of it since my husband and I are really into food and wine. We just thought this would be a great way to spend extra time in Carmel.
Boy, were we surprised! The event occurred at the tasting room and when we arrived, there was a place mat with three types of wines. On the place mat were samples of fruits, nuts, spices and cheeses. The wines provided were a chardonnay, pinot and merlot. During the class, we were invited to experiment for ourselves to help us learn how to pair flavors with wines.
My husband, a history professor, and I were impressed with the educational set up of this class. They gave each attendant a handout and allowed us to mark choices as well as give an open discussion about what we tasted and why we felt some flavors fared better than others.
Afterward, a meal was introduced beginning with a white gazpacho, then a shrimp dish and ending with a chocolate mousse in tiny servings to show how wine and food can be paired with a full course meal.
The owners, a lovely couple, were just so welcoming and hearty! They offered the recipe for the white gazpacho and shrimp dish that my husband cooked for family which was a great hit! I was so impressed with the generous nature of the owners in sharing recipes and ideas that you don't always find such an open sense sharing these days.
