It might be a sin to go to New Orleans and not hear jazz. Venues run the gamut from sophisticated hotel lounges, like trumpeter Jeremy Davenport's eponymous salon at the Ritz-Carlton, to dives like the Spotted Cat on Frenchman Street, where swing dancing locals defy the bar's boite-like parameters. You can't go wrong with Preservation Hall, a venue that dates back to 1961 where you can find nightly jazz shows. And then there's Jazz Fest (officially the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival). The annual celebration of the music of New Orleans showcases jazz (naturally), but also blues, R&B, folk, bluegrass, rap, rock, and country music. Of course, there's food, too, and while the majority of events take place at the Fair Grounds, there are special music performances throughout the city.
