Tracking orangutans in Malaysian Borneo
The Danum Valley Conservation area of Malaysian Borneo is one of the last remaining places on earth to see orangutans in the wild. It's a 2-3 hour ATV trip from the small town of Lahad Datu to the all-inclusive Borneo Rainforest Lodge on the banks of the Danum River, where you can take a relaxing float by tube at the end of a steamy day. For a much less expensive option, hardier folk can look into staying at the Danum Valley Field Center, a research station that provides basic accommodations to paying guests as well as to scientists.
