All you have to do to get a sense of this region when you drive up here is to look around. Rolling hills, family farms galore. For the Blue Mountain Village is smack dab in the middle of Ontario’s rural heartland.
That’s why it’s not a stretch to discover an oasis of artisanal cheeses here—don’t forget that Toronto urbanites who like the good life are frequent visitors to the region.
And don’t forget you’ve just passed through dairy country.
This heritage also explains the roots of Dags and Willow Fine Cheese and Gourmet Shop (named after their dogs). Co-proprietors Kelly Siskind and David Epstein started out selling artisanal cheeses at the Collingwood Farmers’ Market back in 2005. They’ve come a long way since then, now hosting a gourmet delight that includes cheeses from Europe, Quebec and closer to home. They also sell gourmet giftware along with a variety of baked goods.
I once stopped at a cheese shop in downtown Amsterdam—this place gives it a run for its money.
