From November to April, low waters in the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers reveal islets like Cucumber Island, which turns into Luang Prabang’s biggest play- ground. A one-minute, 60-cent ferry ride will get you there—watch for the brightly painted longtail boats that gather near the steps of Wat Xieng Thong. On the island, queue for spicy cucumber salad and grilled fish drizzled with tamarind-peanut sauce, then park yourself on the sand to watch the parade of kids and adults playing soccer and swimming in the river.
