On our way from Zagreb to Plitviče Lakes National Park, we made a worthwhile detour to visit the Croatian War of Independence Museum in Turanj, Karlovac.
I wouldn’t give it points for the most cheerful experience, but it is important to understand Croatia’s recent turbulent history. Traveling through the country today, we could still see constant reminders of a country at war. Buildings have bullet holes in their facades, landmine warning signs can still be seen, and inevitably the experience of war comes up in conversation with the Croats you meet.
The museum, although not quite finished, is a somber place to reflect on the atrocities of war. I remember being in Europe during those years, and it was shocking to think that there was a full blown war happening just a few hours by car from us.
The museum showcases combat vehicles, a thoroughly shelled building, and a Croatian fighter plane, mounted dramatically into the air.
