Celebrate Summer at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade
Imagine a world where mermaids and jellyfish roam the seashore alongside sunburnt city dwellers and the occasional sideshow specimen. Throw in Marie Antoinette on roller skates and the ever present cry of 'Shoot the Freak' and you have a small fraction of the diorama that is Coney Island's Mermaid Parade.
Held every year on the Saturday closest to summer Solstice, thousands flock to New York City's iconic seaside to witness the floats, fantasies and fanfare of a pagan ritual done New York-style. Dress up as your favorite sea creature or just bring your camera and some sun screen. Either way, it's worth the ride to the end of the Q line.
