No visit to Shelter Island is complete without a visit to Commander Cody's Seafood market and restaurant. Here 'The Commander', South Carolina transplant 80-year old Jim Hayward and his daughter Amanda cook up seafood favorites as well as Low Country BBQ ribs, classic sides, and probably the best fried chicken you'll have all summer. You can purchase your own fish at his little market to cook at home, take out or eat in this entirely friendly relaxed little addition to the house Jim built in the 1980s. Outdoor tables in the back lot among parked boats and dogs complete the low key package. An affordable island gem. Open 7 days a week, but The Commander takes a well deserved break in February.
