While motorbiking around Hue, Vietnam, I spotted an edgy oasis from afar - a cafe that could have been plucked from the Lower East Side, NYC and dropped off in the ancient, walled city of Hue. With graffiti artwork adorning the walls, huge silver barrels used as light fixtures and the latest hip-hop music playing out of a boombox, the cool factor was an easy ten out of ten.
Since there weren't any English menus, I started my usual pantomiming with the bartender. When that didn't work the owner, Viet stepped out to help. Several hours and a few drinks later, we had become fast friends. Young, stylish and incredibly eager - Viet graduated from university in Thailand, returned home to Hue and decided to open up a local gathering spot. Inspired by hip-hop music and street art, he launched the artsy, unique Coffee Kick. And, oh what a special coffee house he created!
