The 'dying city'

Large arrow left

Civita is a charming totally medieval city just outside of Bagnoregio, Lazio, Italy. It only has a handful of permanent residents, hence the nickname the 'dying city'. You must climb a long (900') bridge to get to the city as it is only accessible by foot, donkey or moped. The climb gets progressively steeper as it goes, but is worth it for the views and the charm of the city. It is full of great little shops and restaurants. We had lunch in what had been the town cistern. We went originally to see the donkey races, but found they had been canceled. However, while we were there, the local band from Bagnoregio came marching up that hill playing away and they were led into town by a man with a couple of donkeys. Just a great experience all around.
