The city market in downtown Nairobi is a gem. First comes the flower vendor, then the various local eateries where you can get a heaping plate of grilled meats for nearly nothing, and then you stumble through the indoor maze of woodcarvings, bone jewelry and general souvenir goodness into the hart of the matter…the butchers. In a center courtyard style of configuration, there are butchers and fishmongers of all manners, on the perimeter and in the center. Entire pig up on hooks, per-historic giant Nile perch sitting on top of the icebox, goats and beef ruby red like shinny jewels. The vendors shout at each other, at you and god himself. The city transcends its Nairobbery reputation here and feeds its citizens from the fat of the land.
