Local legend claims that Christopher Columbus was born inside Calvi’s citadel. Encircled by five bastions built on the granite foundation, and with the fine 13th-century Cathedral of St.-Jean Baptiste at its highest point, the citadel and its tight alleyways have changed little over the centuries. The city, sea and countryside views from the ramparts are unmatched, while Chez Tao in the citadel is a legendary cabaret whose terrace is popular for its view of the Gulf of Revellata.
