Chinatown Shopping

San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest in North America—it dates back to the 1849 gold rush—and it is home to the largest Chinese community outside of Asia. Most visitors looking to experience the neighborhood head to Grant Avenue, one of its two principal thoroughfares (the other is Stockton Avenue). Shops selling Chinese porcelain, medicinal herbs and inexpensive gifts abound along the street, which also boasts the much-photographed Dragon's Gate (at the intersection with Bush Street).
