The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park extends for almost 200 miles from Alexandria, Virginia to Cumberland, Pennsylvania. Along the way it passes not far from Rockville. Visitors can hike, bike, and run on the towpaths and other canalside trails, while history buffs will want to head to visit the Great Falls Tavern in Potomac (it predates the canal itself, which opened in 1828) and the Brunswick Railroad Museum. If you are feeling very ambitious, a half-hour detour by bike from the canal will take you to Sugarloaf Mountain, where wildflowers bloom in the summer and migratory birds can be spotted in the spring and fall.
