Want to witness a "heated discussion" among Memphians? Ask five people for a favorite barbecue joint, and the answers are sure to be five different restaurants.
But there is one spot most Memphians agree is at least on their list of finalists, and that's Central Barbecue. A spacious version of the Memphis classic opened in Downtown in early 2013, just behind the National Civil Rights Museum. There are three locations in the city, with the original on Central Avenue in Midtown. But the newest location is perfect for visitors to the city who are focusing their visit on the Downtown neighborhood.
It's hard to say what are the best items to order; it all depends on personal preference. But one positive about Central is that it caters to non meat-eaters, too, with a portobello mushroom sandwich.
