One of the most unusual attractions of Riviera Maya is a unique network of natural freshwater pools, or cenotes, that connect to the longest underwater river system in the world. The Mayan people considered the cenotes to be sacred, believing them to be portals to the underworld and a way to communicate with the gods. The cenotes were also a fresh water resource for the Mayans. Today it is possible to visit and swim in many of them, while some of the most sacred ones can be visited at Mayan sites in Riviera Maya.
