Santa Maria Cathedral

Piazza Duomo, 2, 07041 Alghero SS, Italy

Covered by scaffolding until late 2014, Alghero’s main church is now revealed in all its glory, and offers a brief history of religious architecture. Approach it from Via Roma, to the south, and it is a late-Gothic masterpiece; witness it from the Piazza Duomo, and all is serenely classical. The Renaissance interior is delightfully cool on a hot day, with some lovely paintings in the side chapels. It’s worth it to pay the small entry fee to climb the bell tower: The view is magnificent, though do avoid the deafening noonday bell. (Unless you are a serious art-history student, you can feel OK about passing over the small museum of sacred art.)
