Castries Central Market

The capital city's bustling food and handicraft bazaar is open Monday–Saturday, from around 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and has served St. Lucians for more than a century. Rows of vendors display fresh fruit, vegetables and homemade products from their farms, and visitors are welcome to haggle for straw bags and hats, painted calabash bowls and other hand-crafted goods. Pick up St. Lucian coffee, whole spices and "green figs" (St. Lucian slang for unripe bananas), and bring home some authentic cocoa sticks, which when grated and steeped with bay leaves, cinnamon and nutmeg make the local specialty: hot cocoa tea.
