Casa del Popolo and Sala Rossa, across the street from each other on Boulevard Saint-Laurent on the corner of Boulevard Saint-Joseph, have been at the epicenter of Montreal’s independent music scene for the last 15 years, bringing international indie acts into town and fostering local music since the early 2000s. Both clubs were opened by ex-members of the famous Montreal band godspeed you! black emperor and cater to different crowds. Casa has two halves: on one side, it’s a favorite neighborhood watering hole and vegetarian snack bar, while on the other, there’s a space for small, often experimental acts both local and from afar. At the larger Sala, open only on show nights, you’ll find red velvet curtains and crystal chandeliers, which makes it ideal for more ambitious acts as well as cabarets, artsy performances and super crazy fun dance parties. Both clubs are the epitome of shabby chic.
